What is a traumatic tattoo?
Traumatic tattoos result from the deposition of dirt, gravel, or debris in the skin following a scrape or injury to the skin. The traumatic tattoo is typically blue to grey in color and is permanent. Patients are often told that there is nothing that can be done to improve the tattoo.
The Q-switched Nd:Yag laser is the treatment of choice. The traumatic tattoo is first numbed with local anesthesia and the laser is pulsed against the blue-grey color. The skin turns white to grey and is allowed to heal over the next week. Unlike professionally applied cosmetic tattoos, traumatic tattoos may respond to treatment within one to two treatments (but may need more).
